Cabinets of Wonder
Cabinets of Wonder is an installation comprising two infinity-mirrored cabinets, inside which are suspended ten pairs of luridly coloured and embellished beaded viewing devices (or spectacles). Two side tables are arranged with a ViewMaster device, containing slides of each of the pairs of spectacles. Cabinets of Wonder comprises an amalgam of magical visual cues over time: the cabinets nod at Victorian Spiritualism with their hand painted astral motifs and silk velvet curtains; the spectacles incorporate circle and gradient images, which evoke portals and access to magical realms; optical illusions are created with the use of multiple mirrors; intergalactic travel and teleportation is suggested by the digital photography of the slides; the use of ViewMaster 3D immersive media is suggestive of enhanced powers as it relates to a “God-like” viewpoint. ViewMaster 3D slides are utilised in this work to draw a thread back through the history of immersive media. Stereoscopic photography, panorama rooms and, more recently, VR technologies all attempt to create an illusion of transportation, endeavouring to compel the mind into believing it is part of a scene visible in the environment. VR is our closest attempt at magical teleportation into the scene of an image.
